Is This Relationship Unhealthy?

From the U.S.: I have been dating this guy for a year and I recently started thinking that maybe our relationship is unhealthy? When we first started dating he told me he loved me after a month and asked me to move in with him after about 4 months. Before that he would tell me that he would kill me if I left him or cheated on him but I thought he was just playing around. Recently he’s been a little rough with me. Sometimes he’ll squeeze my arm really hard or yell at me in public. He tells me I have to obey him all the time and he doesn’t let me go anywhere without him. Yesterday he hit me on my mouth because I had interrupted him. It didn’t really hurt but I was really unnecessary . He was really nice and caring in the beginning but now he’s mean. Do you think those were possible red flags early on in the relationshipA: Run, don’t walk, away from this relationship. You do not deserve to be hit or hurt. He has no right to know your every move or to threaten you. His behavior is abusive …

Could A Little Narcissism Help Teens Do Well in School?

A new international study finds that young people who score high on certain aspects of subclinical narcissism may be more mentally tough, and in turn, perform better at school.“Narcissism is considered as a socially malevolent trait and is part of the Dark Triad of personality traits: narcissism, psychopathy and Machiavellianism,” said study leader Dr. Kostas Papageorgiou, director of the InteRRaCt lab in the school of psychology at Queen’s University Belfast in Ireland.“Previous studies indicate that narcissism is a growing trend in our society but this does not necessarily mean that an individual who displays high narcissistic qualities has a personality disorder. In our research, we focused on subclinical or ‘normal’ narcissism. Subclinical narcissism includes some of the same features of the clinical syndrome: grandiosity, entitlement, dominance, and superiority.”Researchers have noted that narcissism is a spectrum disorder, existing on a continuum ranging from a few narcissistic …

Pilot Study Screens for Postpartum Depression in the ER

Postpartum depression (PPD) is the most common complication of childbirth, affecting up to 20 percent of all mothers. This figure may be even higher (up to 50 percent) among low-income and immigrant women. The mood disorder can have significant implications for the mother, baby and the entire family. It can hinder mother-child bonding and lead to early discontinuation of breastfeeding, delayed immunizations, or in severe cases, child abuse and neglect.Although new mothers are supposed to be screened routinely for PPD at postpartum visits with their maternal or pediatric health care providers, these screenings often don’t happen, either because doctors aren’t following the recommendations or parents aren’t attending these visits due to barriers to healthcare access or other issues.According to a new study, providing PPD screening for new moms in the emergency department (ED) could help identify women suffering from the often debilitating disorder.“The ED becomes the safety net for peopl…

Little Difference Seen in Mental Health of Kids of Same-Sex Vs. Hetero Parents

Children of same-sex parents show similar levels of mental health as children of heterosexual parents, according to a new Italian study published in the Journal of Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics. With the rise of assisted reproductive technologies, parenthood has become more accessible for same-sex couples. The new study adds to the growing body of evidence showing no increase in problems for children of gay or lesbian parents, compared to children of different-sex parents.“Our findings suggested that children with same-sex parents fare well, both in terms of psychological adjustment and prosocial behavior,” said Professor Roberto Baiocco, Ph.D., and colleagues of Sapienza University of Rome. The study involved three groups of Italian parents: 70 gay fathers who had children through surrogacy, 125 lesbian mothers who had children through donor insemination, and 195 heterosexual couples who had children through spontaneous conception. The children were 3 to 11 years old; the g…

My Best Friend Has Started Molesting Me in My Sleep

A few weeks my best friend (24 m) came over to visit for the weekend. My family look at this boy like another son, they love him and he even has keys to my mother’s house. (I live with my Dad)
The first night -Saturday- nothing happened. But Sunday I woke up orgasaming and his hand was in my pants. I did not know what to do so I just moved his hand and kept a pillow between us for the rest of the night. The next weekend he came over again, but just for Saturday. This time I woke up and both my pants and his pants were missing. Not only that, but my panties had been removed as well (which I do not do no matter how hot I get under the covers..He is due to come over again in a few weeks…What can I possibly do? Who Is More Likely to Share The Wealth?

A social experiment shows that people assigned a “lower status” are more likely to share their wealth than those assigned a “higher status.”The new study from Queen Mary University of London involved a series of economic games in which people played with other people for real money. The games involved participants deciding how much money they kept and how much they gave to a group pot. The money in the pot was always shared with all the players, the researchers explain.Participants were assigned a status, either “higher status” or “lower status.” This determined how much money they were allotted to play the games. In some experiments participants were allocated high or low status based on chance, while in other experiments they were allocated high or low status based on effort, according to the researchers. The study found that, overall, the low-status participants contributed more than the high-status participants. Also, the researchers discovered that high-status participants contribut…

I Think I Don’t Need People

From the U.S.: I am 17 female. I don’t interact with people much. i think i don’t need them and I don’t want to appear needy. In fact I hate appearing needy. I’m too different I feel like I have nothing in common with them. I only interact with people to not appear weird. But the second someone chases me and seems interested in me I tell them all my secrets and we become intimate but most of the time they leave. I generally don’t know how to start a relationship or interacting with people and it makes me feel lonely but i am too arrogant to start chasing people. Most of the time I see no point in things but when I do things I become a perfectionist and try to do my best. But still nothing excites me much. I used to get stressed out easily but now I just don’t care. Do you think something’s wrong here?A: From what you say in your letter, you bounce back and forth between extremes. Either you don’t have anything to do with people or you become too intimate too quickly. You say that you d…

Dissociation

I have been seeing a psychologist for past 2 years weekly. I have suffered from depression and 2 years ago attempted to take my own life. I recovered physically but still everyday is a struggle. I have become isolated, rarely go out only to attend work and prefer this way. I have an adult son who treats me poorly, has been physically and psychologically abusive since he was a teenager, have 3 grandchildren but only see one of them now.
My psychologist thinks I suffer from complex trauma due to childhood abuse from my mother, sexual abuse from my brother, was in a domestic violence with my sons until he took his own life, found closest friend who took her own life, it just goes on and on. How do I recover from this?Sometimes I don’t know if things really did happen or have I dreamt it happened. I feel like I am losing my mind. I don’t know what to do. I feel like a failure, couldn’t even take my own life right. Please help.A. Thank goodness you did not die. Your having failed was a suc…

Why You Should Keep Exercising if You Struggle with Depression

Middle-aged people with high fitness levels are 56 percent less likely to eventually die from heart disease following a depression diagnosis, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Texas (UT) Southwestern and The Cooper Institute. The study, published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry, reveals the many ways in which depression can impact health and mortality. According to the researchers, the earlier you become active, the better your chances of preventing depression, which in the long run will help lower the risk of heart disease. The study also highlights the importance of overcoming a common dilemma among patients already struggling with depression: How does one cope with hopelessness and still find the motivation to exercise?“Maintaining a healthy dose of exercise is difficult, but it can be done. It just requires more effort and addressing unique barriers to regular exercise,” says Dr. Madhukar Trivedi, co-author of the study and Director of the Center for Depres…

Empathetic Police Officers Are More Affected by Public Criticism

Police officers who believe in a more empathetic approach toward criminal justice do not seem to perform as well when they feel they are underappreciated by the public, according to a new study published in the journal Administrative Science Quarterly. The findings reveal that an officer’s ideology — whether more liberal or conservative — tends to correlate with how well they handle perceived animosity and lack of appreciation from the community. For the study, 164 officers answered questions about how they view the criminal justice system and how well they think the public understands the challenges of their job. In addition, independent experts analyzed 794 bodycam videos of the officers conducting their everyday duties, including jail transports, traffic and DUI stops, transient arrests, car crashes, building searches and house alarm calls. The findings show that officers who favored a more compassionate approach to justice struggled to be effective when they felt underappreciated. Peer-Led Groups Can Help College Students Get Mental Health Services

A new study finds that getting college students to engage with peer-run organizations that focus on mental health awareness can reduce campus-wide mental health stigma and help people receive necessary mental health services. The RAND Corporation investigation discovered improving college students’ knowledge about mental health can play an important role in improving the campus climate toward mental health. The research is the largest longitudinal study examining the impact of a student mental health peer organization on students’ mental health stigma, knowledge and helping behaviors. Investigators followed 1,129 students from 12 California college campuses.Researchers found that students’ familiarity with Active Minds, one such student mental health peer organization, was linked to a decrease in stigma about mental health issues over time, while involvement with the program was associated with an increase in helping behaviors. The study appears online in the Journal of the American Acad…

Cohabiting Tied to Less Wealth Accumulation

A new study, published in the Journal of Financial Planning, finds there may be long-term financial implications when unmarried couples decide to live together. The findings show that couples who cohabited had less wealth compared with those who never lived together before marriage. The gap in wealth grew significantly for those who cohabited more than once.“Cohabiting relationships tend to be more short-term and unstable, and you keep starting over every time. That is difficult for wealth generation,” said Dr. Cassandra Dorius, an assistant professor of human development and family studies at Iowa State University. For the study, researchers from Iowa State and Kansas State universities analyzed data from the 1997 cohort of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, which included individuals born between 1980 and 1984. Of the more than 5,000 millennials (ages 28 to 34) in the sample, 45 percent were married, 18 percent were cohabitating and 37 percent were unmarried and not living wit…
