The Tour de France is defined by its climbs and the general classification battle in the mountains. We take a look at the five toughest and most influential climbs of the 105th edition of this iconic race. First raced in 1952, Alpe d’Huez was the first ever summit finish in the Tour de France. Each of the 21 hairpin bends that make up the climb is named after previous winners there, making climbing it a sort of journey back through the history of cycling. Despite its length, and fearsome average gradient, Alpe d’Huez is probably best known for its fans, in particular, ‘dutch corner’. Tourmalet - No climb has featured more in the Tour de France than the Col du Tourmalet, to date the Tourmalet has been climbed no less than 85 times! When it was first included in the 1910 Tour, the first rider to cross the summit was Octave Lapize, who famously remarked to some watching officials “Vous etes des assassins!”. This year the race tackles the Tourmalet from the eastern side, which averages 7.3% for 17.1km, topping out at 2115m, which makes it the highest paved mountain pass in the Pyrenees. Or at least it will be the highest until the Col de Portet is paved this summer. The Tourmalet will feature halfway through the epic 200km final mountain stage from Lourdes to Laruns.
