Iowa Teen Has to Relearn How to Walk After Attempting the Keke Challenge

Eighteen-year-old Anna Worden had been dancing since she was three, so she didn’t hesitate to try the Keke challenge (the viral trend where people film themselves dancing to Drake’s “In My Feelings” alongside their moving car). But before her friends could begin filming, Worden tripped and hit her head, resulting in a fractured skull, bleeding in her brain, and blood clots in her ear. Her doctors say she’ll need extensive physical therapy to learn how to walk again. Worden isn’t the only one who has been injured—other videos show people falling, running into objects, and even having their belongings stolen while attempting the challenge. A statement by the National Transportation Safety Board sums it up: “Don’t jump out of a moving car for a meme. That’s it. It’s foolish, it puts other road users at risk, and, it’s an excellent way to suffer road rash, legal penalties, or worse. By posting such a video, you’re providing evidence not just of your dance moves, but of any laws you may be…

Racial disparities in prescribing opioids for chronic pain

Researchers have identified racial disparities in the treatment of patients who are prescribed opioids for chronic pain. Black patients who receive opioids long-term are more likely than whites to be tested for illicit drug use. Of those who test positive, blacks are more likely to have their opioid prescriptions discontinued, said the researchers.

Kids More Likely to Eat School Breakfast When Given Extra Time

Elementary students are more likely to eat a nutritious school breakfast when given just 10 extra minutes in the cafeteria, according to a new study published in the American Journal of Agricultural Economics.Breakfast consumption rose even higher when breakfasts were served inside the classroom, but the researchers acknowledged that this is not a feasible option for most schools.Researchers at Virginia Tech and Georgia Southern University observed how students change their breakfast consumption levels when given extra time to eat in a school cafeteria. They also compared cafeteria breakfasts to in-classroom breakfasts in the same group of students.“It’s by far the most sophisticated, accurate measurement of school breakfast intake ever done,” said Dr. Klaus Moeltner, a professor of agricultural and applied economics in the Virginia Tech College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. “We know exactly how much the students consumed and how much time they had to consume it.”With the use of f…

My Boyfriend Doesn’t Make Me Feel Special

From a teen in the U.S.: My boyfriend and I have been dating for almost 9 months and we’ve only been on 1 date (the day we started dating). I just feel like he’s not putting his full effort into our relationship. In the beginning, he admitted to pleasing another female. He’s not really sincere with gifts and important dates. He’s lied to me and He’s let me down multiple times.I read a post that told me that i need to love myself first and do other things like hobbies, maintain friends, etc. If he doesn’t make me feel special. I do center most of my time thinking about him. Do you think this is something that can be mended? Cross your fingers our sit down discussion goes well.No. I don’t think this can be “mended”. I don’t even think there is something worth mending. This guy is not boyfriend material. Please take an honest look at why it is that you are willing to stay in a relationship with a liar who lets you down often and doesn’t join with you in making good times together. You des…

‘Phantom Odors’ Not Uncommon in Those Over 40

A new study reveals that 1 in 15 Americans (6.5 percent) over the age of 40 experiences phantom odors — smells that aren’t actually there. As we age, our ability to identify odors tends to decrease. Phantom odor perception, on the other hand, seems to increase with age. In a previous Swedish study, for example, researchers found that 4.9 percent of people over the age of 60 experienced phantom odors. It also found a higher prevalence in women than men.The new study, published in the journal JAMA Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, found a similar prevalence in the over-60 age group. But when the researchers expanded to a broader age range, they discovered an even higher prevalence among people between the ages of 40 and 60.The new findings also show that about twice as many women as men reported phantom odors, and that the female predominance was particularly striking for those under age 60.Donald Leopold, M.D., one of the study’s authors and clinical professor in the department of s…

Prenatal Exposure to Violence May Hike Toddlers’ Aggression Toward Mothers

Toddlers whose mothers experienced interpersonal violence during pregnancy are more likely to exhibit aggression and defiance toward their mothers, according to a new study. While it is well-known that pregnant women have an elevated risk for domestic violence, much of the associated research focuses on the negative impact of that violence on pregnancy, labor, and delivery. For their study, researchers at the University of Notre Dame examined the short- and long-term impact of prenatal violence (regardless of perpetrator) on children’s later adjustment outcomes.“We wanted to map out how the impact of violence cascades over time,” said Dr. Laura Miller-Graff, an assistant professor of psychology and peace studies. “Prenatal violence primarily affects kids via how it affects the mother.”“Research has shown that many mothers who live in domestic violence situations have pretty strong parenting skills, but when violence affects their mental health, parenting can become more difficult as we…

MDs’ Own Experience May Impact Cancer Screening Recommendations

Humans are highly prone to overestimating the likelihood of rare events, such as shark attacks or winning the lottery. This tendency is known as “availability bias,” the inclination to judge the frequency of an event by how easy it is to recall examples from memory. For example, if you’ve watched the movie “Jaws” or daydreamed what you would do with the Powerball jackpot, it will be quite easy for you to pull up vivid, emotional images of these events, making these rare events seem much more likely to happen. The availability of these events in your mind overpowers the much more mundane reality that you actually have only 1 in 292,201,338 chance of winning Powerball. And even among beachgoers, the chance of being attacked by a shark is only about 1 in 11.5 million. Now a new study, published in the Journal of Women’s Health, reveals that availability bias may also influence how often a doctor recommends cancer screenings for patients.Overall, screening guidelines are designed to do the m…

DDT Metabolite in Pregnant Women Linked to Autism in Kids

Elevated levels of a metabolite of the banned insecticide DDT in the blood of pregnant women have been linked to an increased risk for autism in children, according to new research. The study of more than 1 million pregnancies in Finland is the first to connect an insecticide with risk for autism using maternal biomarkers of exposure, according to an international research team led by scientists at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health and the Department of Psychiatry.Researchers identified 778 cases of childhood autism among children born from 1987 to 2005 to women enrolled in the Finnish Maternity Cohort, which represents 98 percent of pregnant women in Finland. The researchers matched these mother-child pairs with mothers and children who did not have autism.Maternal blood taken during early pregnancy was analyzed for DDE, a metabolite of DDT, and PCBs, another class of environmental pollutants, the researchers explained. The researchers discovered that the odds of aut…

Do I Have Aspergers?

My dad has been diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome, but I never really thought much of it. I’ve never had many friends. I’ve kept a journal for years, and in my earliest entries I blamed this on other people. I thought that they didn’t understand me. But lately I think I just don’t understand them. More and more I’ve noticed people getting frustrated because I don’t understand what they mean, or I ask them to explain. They ask me how could they possibly get more specific. I’ve been very bothered with it, and I’ve found that I have become very depressed. I’m not really sure how to get help, or if I even need it. I could really use some help just knowing why I am as I am.Unfortunately, this is a question that is difficult to answer over the internet. I don’t have enough information about the situations you have described to determine if you are correctly interpreting them. It’s worrisome that you have become depressed. This is a sign that intervention is necessary. I would encourage you to…

Why Some Who Have Alzheimer’s Brain Markers Don’t Have Dementia

A new study has uncovered why some people who have brain markers of Alzheimer’s never develop dementia.Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia, affects more than 5 million Americans. People suffering from Alzheimer’s develop a buildup of two proteins that impair communications between nerve cells in the brain — plaques made of amyloid beta proteins and neurofibrillary tangles made of tau proteins. However, not all people with those signs of Alzheimer’s show any cognitive decline during their lifetime. The question for researchers became what sets these people apart from those with the same plaques and tangles that develop dementia?“In previous studies, we found that while the non-demented people with Alzheimer’s neuropathology had amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles just like the demented people did, the toxic amyloid beta and tau proteins did not accumulate at synapses, the point of communication between nerve cells,” said Dr. Giulio Taglialatela, director of the …

Dominant Men Tend to Make Faster Decisions

Behavioral scientists have known that social dominance depends at least partly on one’s ability to make decisions faster than other people. This skill would allow the individual to act first in social situations, which might confer an evolutionary advantage. Dominant individuals, for example, tend to climb higher up the hierarchy ladder of their particular society, earning priority access to resources. But do dominant individuals exhibit this fast decision-making ability outside of social contexts? Researchers at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland have conducted a large behavioral study on men to examine this question.Their findings show a clear correlation between higher social dominance and faster decision-making outside of a social competition context. The study involved 240 male students at EPFL and the University of Lausanne (UNIL). The men were divided into high or low dominance groups by a standard “dominance scoring” questionnaire that has been validat…

How Much Do Personalities Change in 50 Years?

Social scientists have long debated whether personality is stable throughout an entire lifetime or if it is more malleable. Previous research suggests it could be both, but longitudinal studies covering very long time-spans and relying on the same data source at both time points are rare.In a new long-term study, researchers from the University of Houston found that personality is influenced by both genetics and environment. And while our broad patterns of thoughts, feelings and behaviors (essentials of our personalities) remain fairly consistent, they do mature or develop over time.“Our findings suggest that personality has a stable component across the lifespan, both at the trait level and at the profile level, and that personality is also malleable and people mature as they age,” the researchers wrote in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.Personality is described as patterns of thoughts, feelings and behaviors, consisting of five major traits: conscientiousness, agree…

I Don’t Think My Parents Like Me

From a teen in Belgium: So I don’t think my parents like me anymore. I’ve got a sister who has very good grades and is participating on a lot of swimming competitions, she wins always… They only have attention for her and I feel forgotten, my parents talk about her all the time. My whole life depends on when she has competitions or when she has to practice. My parents can’t say anything good about me, they always complain that my grades aren’t as good as my sister’s, that I’m not sportive as my sister… They always have something bad to say about me. And while my sister is laying in the couch, I can do the laundry, the dishes, clean the whole place, because ” she is tired”.I HATE MY LIFE!Lately I’m fighting a lot with my parents and then they say horrible stuff to me. So I decided to cut my self… I did it twice and it felt good, but my friend discovered it and got mad at me, so I stopped cutting.I’m afraid my parents will never love me again…I’m very sorry you are in so much pain. My Step Dad Is Making Me Extremely Anxious and Intimidating Me

He seems to be breaking me down mentally. My step dad hates me and tries to make me uncomfortable when I’m in the same room as him, he will make lots of gestures that are not natural and very deliberate and do it in the corner of my eye and I can’t help not be conscious of it and it annoys me as I won’t look at him and he will do slow/fast gestures in patterns and then suddenly do something different as I don’t know what to expect. This makes me feel uneasy and I know he intentionally does it and knows what he is doing and also make lots of noises like clicking his fingers, yawning, playing loud music on his phone and then stopping and suddenly starting it again.
