I’m 30 and Still Don’t Know What to Do with My Life

I have been feeling lost and confused about life. I’m 30 and still don’t know what I want to do with my life. I did not go to college and I don’t feel It’s for me. I work in retail but I hate it. I thought I had a passion for other jobs that I’ve had in life, but it turned out I don’t. I can’t find anything that makes me happy and that I can stand. I quit jobs constantly because I don’t like them or I just feel like i don’t fit in with the people at the jobs. I Don’t Know What’s Wrong with Me

I’m not in a constant state of sadness, but I have moments where I feel very sad, sometimes even suicidal. I recently asked my parents if I could get a therapist, but I only mentioned stress because I thought they would be too worried if I mentioned depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts. However, I did end up telling my principal two days ago that I think about harming myself about once a week, which means she told my dad that I do. He’s in another country, so he’s not addressing it directly; he has just been writing more emails to me.
I broke up with my boyfriend about 3 months ago (about a month after school started), and ever since then, I feel very awkward when talking to anyone besides the people I have known for two years. Why Neighborhood Violence Affects Some Young People But Not Others

Living in a high-crime neighborhood is linked to poor health outcomes for young people, including sleep loss, asthma and metabolic syndrome. Yet some youth living in violent neighborhoods seem to avoid these negative effects.In a new study, researchers at Northwestern University in Illinois wanted to know why some teens are affected by second-hand or indirect experience of neighborhood violence while others are not.“Little is known about the brain networks that are involved in shaping these different outcomes, a problem we pursue here,” said Gregory E. Major Brain Scan Study Sheds Light on OCD Behaviors

In the largest brain scan analysis of its kind, researchers from the University of Michigan (U-M) have identified the specific brain regions and processes linked to the repetitive behaviors found in people with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).The findings, published in the journal Biological Psychiatry, suggest that the brains of those with OCD get stuck in a loop of “wrongness,” even when patients know that what they’re doing doesn’t make sense.“These results show that, in OCD, the brain responds too much to errors, and too little to stop signals, abnormalities that researchers had suspected to play a crucial role in OCD, but that had not been conclusively shown due to small numbers of participants in the individual studies,” says Dr. Luke Norman, lead author of the new study and a postdoctoral research fellow in the U-M Department of Psychiatry.“By combining data from ten studies, and nearly 500 patients and healthy volunteers, we could see how brain circuits long hypothesized t…

Breakup Stages

I am wondering what stage of breakup I am in. Breakup occurred three weeks ago, had been five years with him. I’m starting to accept the reality, but I’m wondering if I’m still in denial and have the other four stages of grief to go through. He (former boyfriend) blindsided me with the breakup, it was sudden. I have spent many days being extremely upset and wanting him to contact me and tell me he regrets that decision. On the Weeks I Go for Therapy I Feel So Fine I’ve Nothing to Say, But on Weeks I Don’t I’m Overwhelmed

I see my school therapist every two weeks, and coincidentally it always happens that the week has gone well and I feel fine. I show up with nothing much to say, nothing much to ‘work towards’, because I genuinely think I’m already okay.But I’m realizing the weeks without therapy then happen to be the ones when I completely fall apart. I’m so sad I cry for hours not knowing why, and I so want to go to the counselling center at those times because I’m so overwhelmed (with things I can’t even pinpoint) but I don’t know what counts as an emergency so I don’t. It gets to the point where I skip some classes in college because I can’t stop crying, or I just am so tired I don’t want to get out of bed. I have spent entire days just sleeping and it’s really all I want to do. Investigators believe they have determined the basic traits that characterize a psychologically healthy individual. The revelation comes after decades of scientific interest on personality types and how people differ from one another.In the new study, researchers from the University of California, Davis, used a contemporary trait perspective to determine that a healthy personality can be described in terms of the 30 facets of the “big five” model of personality traits.This model organizes personality into five major factors: neuroticism, extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness, and conscientiousness. Husband’s Lashing Out

My husband I have been married for three years and up until about three months ago, things have been great. There have been a number of stressful events for him lately: I had a minor health crisis and a car accident (unrelated), he experienced medication-induced weight gain (a BIG no-no for him). Also, he was adopted as a baby and recently found his biological family. That’s been very positive, but very emotional too.
Lately, he’s been lashing out at me on a regular — almost nightly basis. The slightest thing can set him off. He gets angry if I don’t help enough. But many times, I’ll ask “What can I do for you after work?” He’ll say “nothing.” Then he gets mad at me for not helping. Or he’ll say he had ABCDXYZ to do and I didn’t do any of it. If I point out that I had no idea he had all that and he should have asked for my help, he snaps that I should have just known it.

Vets with Multiple Brain Injuries May Be at Greater Risk of Suicide

Iraq and Afghanistan veterans with multiple traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are about twice as likely to consider suicide compared to those with only one TBI or none, according to a new Veterans Affairs study published online in the journal Psychological Services.“Suicide is a major concern with veterans,” said Dr. Robert Shura, a neuropsychologist at the W.G. (Bill) Hefner VA Medical Center in North Carolina and study leader.“Right now, the prime point of intervention is at the level of thinking about suicide. Therefore, identifying characteristics of veterans who are more likely to think about suicide is a high priority.”The study findings come from interviews with more than 800 veterans who held combat roles in Iraq and Afghanistan. About half of the veterans reported at least one TBI.The researchers were primarily focused on whether the vets had experienced suicidal thoughts in the past week. In the largest genetic study of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to date, an international research team has discovered the first common genetic risk factors associated with the disorder.The findings are published in the journal Nature Genetics.“This study marks a very important step in beginning to understand the genetic and biological underpinnings of ADHD,” said Professor Anita Thapar from Cardiff University in Wales, who leads an ADHD research group as part of the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium.“The genetic risk variants related to this condition play a significant role in brain-related and other core biological processes.
