Waterproof Care | How To Look After Waterproof Jackets And Shorts
Decent waterproof kit allows you to ride your mountain bike in any weather. But as with any good bit of MTB kit it needs to be looked after and cared for properly. Technical fabrics like Gore-Tex are great at being breathable in all weather conditions, but require specific care. In this video Doddy shows you the best way to care and repair your waterproof jackets and shorts. In association with Gore. Subscribe to GMBN: Get exclusive GMBN gear in the GMBN store! Gore-Tex is perhaps the most famous waterproof but breathable fabric commonly used, and for a good reason. It's made up from different layers of fabric which work together to pass heat vapour away from your body, without letting wind or water through. The top layers have a durable water repellency (DWR) coating, which allows water to bead and roll off the garment rather than be absorbed. The specific care tips for your garments can be found in the labels, and we recommend following them. Otherwise there are some simple day to day things that you can do to look after your clothing which will significantly extend their longevity. After a ride spray the garments down with water and allow them to drip dry. Clothing made from Gore-Tex can actually handle being washed regularly, whereas other materials will require reproofing after a wash to keep them waterproof. Just remember to wash on a low heat without fabric softeners. Some fabrics will require a regular DWR coating to keep them effective, which is available as a handy spray. Just be sure to check what material your clothing is made out of, and how it should be applied. Materials like Gore-Tex should always retain their waterproofing and only require the DWR treatment to ensure the water beads on the surface. Remember to lube your zips regularly to avoid them getting clogged with dirt and grit. If this happens it can be all to easy to accidentally tear your expensive jacket when trying to work the zip. Specialist repair patches are available for most fabrics. Gore-Tex has a dedicated tear repair patch which irons on, whilst others can be fixed with a patch much like a puncture repair kit. Working Remotely Is Not Necessarily Stress-Free

Many believe that working from home or remotely can foster freedom and stress-free job satisfaction, and that everyone wants  more work autonomy.A new study from Baylor University in Waco, Texas, says “Not so fast.”In the study, researchers examined the impact of remote work on employee well-being. Their findings suggest that a variety of factors can undermine or accent the employee benefits of working off-site.Accordingly, researchers developed new strategies to help managers provide remote-work opportunities that are valuable to the employee and the company.“Any organization, regardless of the extent to which people work remotely, needs to consider well-being of their employees as they implement more flexible working practices,” the researchers wrote. The study appears in the European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology. In the review, a total of 403 working adults were surveyed for the two studies that made up the research, said lead author Sara Perry, Ph.D.Researchers meas…

For Many with Severe Mental Illness, Spirituality Plays Role in Well-Being

A majority of young adults with severe mental illness, such as major depression, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, consider religion and spirituality relevant to their mental health, according to a new study published in the journal Spirituality in Clinical Practice. For the study, researchers from Baylor University interviewed a racially diverse sample of 55 young adults (ages 18-25) with serious mental illness who had used crisis emergency services. Their findings suggest that religion is an important issue to patients, but one that is rarely addressed in a health care setting.“Not only did these young adults struggle with serious mental illness, but they had also experienced extreme adversity — including abuse, poverty, homelessness, addiction, near-death experiences, loss and an overwhelming lack of access to medical and mental health services,” writes lead author Holly Oxhandler, Ph.D., associate dean for research and faculty development in the Garland School of Social Work at Ba…
