Tackling Concussions

An estimated 2.5 million high school students reported having at least one concussion over the past year. The concussions were related to sports or physical activity. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1 million students reported having two or more concussions during the same time frame.

Middle school students from Upper Saddle River, New Jersey, decided to tackle the concussion epidemic by creating a new way to detect potential injuries. Inspired by a friend who suffered from the negative effects of a concussion, they worked on creating a special sensor for football helmets to improve the detection of potentially hard hits that could lead to concussion symptoms. Their sensor won the 2018 Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest.

Discovery may change cancer treatment

A discovery has been made that may change the principles for treating certain types of cancer. The discovery relates to the so-called telomeres that constitute the ends of human chromosomes. Short telomeres are related to unhealthy lifestyles, old age and the male gender -- all of which are risk factors in terms of high mortality.
