Feelings Dependent on Responses to Messages

I’ve been having problems lately controlling my patience and emotions over whether or not someone replies to my text messages/emails. All started a few months ago I was catching up with a friend over text. As she had recent success with relationships, while I have been struggling with interpersonal relationships in recent times, I reached out to ask her opinion over what positive qualities she saw in me, as I’ve done with my close friends and family to combat my self-esteem problems, because she has been one of the better friends I’ve met in recent times. No response. Another instance of this happening was when I wished a friend I used to have a crush on happy birthday, I thought it would be a chance to ask her how things were going, as we had not talked in awhile. Again, no response. Sometimes when I post to an online forum but don’t get replies, I feel like I am a big annoyance and bother. After some of these occurrences I have had more frequent intrusive thought attacks, with my an…

How Do I Cope?

From a teen in Indonesia: I am a 19 y.o. female who experiences abuse since childhood (verbally and physically) from my caregiver and was diagnosed with chronic depression. However, I feel like my symptomps are more compatible with C-PTSD. Another disturbing feeling I experienced but not listed in the C-PTSD symptomps is a sense of sadness and loss of momentary joy when I part with my friends. I also feel like though I have friends that (supposedly) dear me, I also feel like I’m alone and can’t depend/open up to them because I feel like I’m being bothersome. I feel like I have no one I could really rely on and it could be frustratingly lonely sometimes. I have a difficult time putting my feelings to words and I feel like nobody can really understand.
My question is: are those normal feelings someone with C-PTSD experiences or is there something else going on with me?I live in a small city in South Asia and the psychiatrists I saw are not familiar with C-PTSD. Please kindly help answer…

School Nutrition Programs May Slow Weight Gain in Teens

Preteens and teens who attend middle schools with nutrition policies and healthy-eating programs experience less of an increase in body mass index (BMI) compared to students who attend schools without such programs, according to a new study led by the Yale School of Public Health. The findings are published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.More than one in five American teenagers are currently obese, and around half of teens are overweight. Being overweight or obese early in life affects health across the lifespan, contributing to a range of chronic diseases such as depression, hypertension and diabetes that reduce productivity and shorten life expectancy. The five-year trial followed nearly 600 students from 12 schools in New Haven, Connecticut. It is one of the first school-based policy intervention studies that followed students through middle school.“These findings can guide future school and community interventions. Childhood obesity is a serious health threat, and sc…

How Teens Handle Stress Can Yield Long-Term Health Effects

How a teen handles chronic stress — whether they bottle up their emotions or put a positive spin on things — can affect processes in the body like blood pressure and how immune cells respond to bacterial invaders, according to new research published in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine. For the study, Penn State researchers looked at whether the strategies adolescents use to deal with chronic family stress can impact various metabolic and immune processes in the body. Two notable strategies used by teens in the study were cognitive reappraisal (trying to think of the stressor in a more positive way) and suppression (inhibiting the expression of emotions in reaction to a stressor). The findings reveal that when faced with chronic family stress, teens who used cognitive reappraisal had better metabolic measures, such as blood pressure and waist-to-hip ratio — a measurement used as an indicator of health and chronic disease risk.Teens who were more likely to use suppression tended to have …

Vaping Has Created a New Generation of Nicotine-Addicted Teens

A few years ago, teen smoking had dropped to a historic low. Now, those numbers are rising again. A recent study by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) found that fewer teens are using heroin, prescription opioid medications, and alcohol, but vaping and marijuana are increasingly popular with middle and high school students. Over one-third of high school seniors say they’ve used a vaping product, but many don’t realize that the flavorings can contain nicotine and other potentially harmful chemicals. Teens who vape are more likely to also smoke cigarettes, and many move back and forth between vaping and smoking. NIDA also found that 36 percent of seniors used marijuana at least sometimes, and close to 6 percent said they used it daily. Many teens see marijuana as safe and natural, but health officials say that cannabis causes lasting cognitive impairment in adolescents and is worse for teen brains than alcohol.

Probably Compulsion

I don’t know if this problem is psychologically related. It’s been almost a year now,and I have been obsessing about certain things. This feeling usually occurs mostly during the holidays. The latest is my obsession about saliva swallowing in my body.I seem to concentrate on it so much that I’m worried that it’s affecting me so much now.I can’t even watch TV comfortably. In the past,I have experienced certain obsessions like my breathing.I seem not to think about these obsessions whenever I am in an interesting discussion, playing video games and doing exercise or sporting activities.
I would be most grateful if you can assist me with the knowledge of this problem and how it can be cured. Thanks a lot.Unfortunately, you’ve offered too little information to help me identify the problem. In addition, it’s impossible to diagnose over the Internet. Based upon the information provided, your symptoms may indicate an anxiety disorder. These obsessions seem to be stress-induced. They may occur dur…

How the Young and Old Make Financial Decisions for Others

A new study by Singaporean researchers shows that when people are asked to make financial decisions for strangers, older adults tend to make the same financial choices they would make for themselves, while young adults tend to take more risks with others’ money. The findings are published in the journal Psychology and Aging.“Our results demonstrate that decision-makers of different age groups have different motivational goals,” said team leader Assistant Professor Yu Rongjun, from the Department of Psychology at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.“The young adults may treat the finances of others’ differently from their own, perhaps regarding them as being less important. On the other hand, the older generation may care more about social harmony and emotional experience, and have less emphasis on material gains.”People often need to make financial choices for themselves, and sometimes, on behalf of others. While research has shown that younge…

I believe in the fundamental truth of all great religions of the world. I believe that they are all God-given and I believe that they were necessary for the people to whom these religions were revealed. And I believe that if only we could all of us read the scriptures of the different faiths from the standpoints of the followers of these faiths, we should find that they were at bottom all one and were all helpful to one another. - MK Gandhi

How to Confront a Narcissistic Mother That Lives with You

I’m divorced and started dating. My mother is against my relationship and it has become to the point I have to choose. How do I do this? I’m a smart, independent woman that can’t break my dependency with her. I am capable of many things, but I am handicapped with her. She blocks me, makes me feel guilty. I need help to do this but don’t want to crush her.Narcissists don’t crush. They tend to be quite insulated from feeling affected by others. The fact that you think you’ll hurt her if you take care of your own needs is a major part of the problem. Your mother trying to make you feel guilty lets you know that she isn’t invested in your well-beingThe balance in managing yourself around someone as self-absorbed as your mother is knowing you have a choice between feeling guilty for taking care of your emotional needs, or feeling resentful when you don’t. Always choose feeling guilty for taking care of yourself because the resentment you’ll feel for not doing so will cause you to alienate …

Schizophrenia May Disrupt Bodily Experience of Emotion

A new study shows that how people experience emotion through their bodies is radically altered in people with schizophrenia. For the study, researchers at Vanderbilt University compared individuals with schizophrenia with matched control participants, asking each to fill in a “body map” in a way that correlates to the way they physically experience emotion. The researchers used a computerized coloring task to locate where participants feel sensations when they experience, for example, anger or depression.According to the study’s findings, the outcomes differed radically between the groups. The control group showed distinct maps of sensations for 13 different emotions, indicating specific patterns of increased arousal and decreased energy across the body for each emotion. However, in individuals with schizophrenia, there was an overall reduction of bodily sensation across all emotions. The study also found that individuals with schizophrenia don’t differentiate on their body maps for varyi…

Will Being around a Woman with TBI Be Risky for My Baby?

From the U.S.: My husband and I used to both be friends with some neighbors. One of them has a TBI. For a year, she was calm around us, although we knew that she screamed and berated her husband each day. Then, she turned the same volatile screaming on me one day because she didn’t like that I was doing my MBA homework. I have never returned. My husband still goes over to their house because he’s afraid of how she’d respond or act otherwise. Now, I am concerned because we are expecting our first baby. I refuse to let our child ever see or be near her because I am afraid that she will hurt the child mentally (most likely) or physically (less likely). She is more volatile and filled with rage than anyone I’ve ever met, which includes my physically abusive, biological father. Two questions: 1) Am I right to worry? Is there research to back my concerns? I don’t see any reason to risk my child’s safety around a woman who I am too afraid to talk to anymore. My husband is afraid she might stor…

Brain Seems to Reward Us Twice With Each Meal

A new study shows that the hormone dopamine is released two times during a meal: when the food is first ingested and when the food reaches the stomach.“With the help of a new positron emission tomography (PET) technique we developed, we were not only able to find the two peaks of dopamine release, but we could also identify the specific brain regions that were associated with these releases,” said senior author Dr. Marc Tittgemeyer, head of the Max Planck Institute for Metabolism Research in Cologne, Germany.“While the first release occurred in brain regions associated with reward and sensory perception, the post-ingestive release involved additional regions related to higher cognitive functions.”For the study, 12 healthy volunteers received either a palatable milkshake or a tasteless solution while PET data was recorded. The researchers discovered that the volunteers’ craving or desire for the milkshake was proportionally linked to the amount of dopamine released in particular brain a…

Cultural Activities May Reduce Risk of Depression in Middle and Old Age

Regular visits to the theater, art galleries or museums can dramatically reduce the odds of developing depression in middle and old age, according to a new U.K. study by researchers at University College London. The findings, published in the British Journal of Psychiatry, show a clear link between the frequency of “cultural engagement” and the chances of a person over 50 developing depression. The study is the first to demonstrate that cultural activities not only help people manage and recover from depression but can also help to prevent it.The researchers found that participants who attended films, plays or exhibitions every few months had a 32 percent lower risk of developing depression, while those attending once a month or more had a 48 percent lower risk. The researchers hope to encourage greater awareness of the benefits so that people can take better control of their own mental health.“Generally speaking, people know the benefits of eating their five-a-day and of exercise for t…

Russian Study Finds Gender Norms Begin in Kindergarten

A new study from Russia shows that the beginnings of gender norms can be traced to kindergarten. In the study, sociologists at the National Research University Higher School of Economics in Russia found that kindergarten teachers transmit social norms to children, including conservative ideas of femininity and masculinity.“Doing gender” — forming an understanding of masculinity and femininity — permeates every aspect of a kindergartener’s life, from games to showing an interest in certain professions, according to School of Sociology Associate Professor Olga Savinskaya and Anastasia Cheredeeva.Femininity and masculinity form “narrowly, according to conventional stereotypes,” researchers found in the study, which was based on interviews with mothers aged 27-40 and with mother-daughter pairs in which the children were 4 to 7 years old.According to sociologist and girlhood researcher Professor Elena Iarskaia-Smirnova, starting from preschool age, teachers encourage boys to express themsel…

Recognizing Prosperity

As we start the New Year, many of us seek wealth or prosperity: a raise, a new car, a bigger house. Our goals reflect the desire for more money, more things. However, when we seek material prosperity, it's easy to miss the prosperity we already have — such as our health, our friendships, and family. In today's meditation, we recognize our present prosperity in areas including — but not limited to — our financial and physical wealth. By acknowledging our current prosperity, we open the door for more blessings to come our way. Boyfriend Has Retrospective Jealousy

I am in a relationship for the past 8 months and have been really happy in it(although I don’t know what happiness is because I don’t remember the last time I was happy). My boyfriend is a year and a half younger to me yet is my senior in college(because I dropped two years between school and college). He is a very nice guy and absolutely lovable, and am his first girlfriend. In the initial days I told him briefly about my past 3 relationships and thought he’d be fine with it, but it turned out after a few days that he wasn’t able to take in the fact that I have been with others before him and started having a million questions. I answered patiently and eventually one day lost my cool as the series of questions wasn’t ending. He said he realized he’s having a severe retroactive jealousy and he can’t help it that he’s haunted by my past. He finds it too difficult to accept me as I am. Although I lost my virginity with him and never as much as even kissed any of my exes properly(only ha…
